Siobhan Davies – Plants and Ghosts
Whilst searching through the Siobhan Davies archive looking through her works, i discovered a piece named ‘Plants and Ghosts’, by just the name i was curious to find out what the piece was about. I read the analysis of the piece after i questioned myself about the piece. I was intrigued at the very beginning as there was hardly any light, and one person dancing quite quick and jerky. The lighting was intensely dark, however it had worked well with the emphasis and shadow patterns it had created.
As the piece begins to get more intense, more dancers are added to the performance, it is obvious that they are moving in relation to each other, by crossing each other’s paths but never coming into contact with one another, the use of stillness was interesting as a clear connection was made between the dancers, a great awareness had been threaded into the piece, and the dancers have really brought their personal ideas and movement into the piece.
Whilst watching the piece, i seem to get the imagery of the movement being sewn together, an idea of being repaired, as the dancers come together, instead of repelling against each other, they work in relation. However another piece of imagery that springs to mind is the sense of aliens standing in front of bright lights creating shadows and silhouettes.
As i read the analysis, after witnessing the performance, a quote in relation to the imagery that immediately sprung to mind, had been realised.
‘The piece is seeded with different ideas, and threaded with the theme of growth. It opens with small, embryonic actions which swell and multiply like cells; later, scattered jigsaw fragments of movement gradually mesh into tighter wholes.’
The piece works well with repetition and working in relation to others, as mentioned before it really shows the relationship and intensity of the dancers, whilst crossing paths and working with development. Many imagery thoughts and ideas can derived from this piece, and would also be recommended for inspiration.
This blog will contain pictures, texts and videos throughout my time at coventry university. I'll update any recent work i've produced along with ideas, thoughts and anything that intrests me.

Siobhan Davies Scrapbook material

This was the scrapbook we created in a d-traces workshop, we viewed pieces of siobhan davies work and viewed her ideas and stimuli's along with sounds, and added what interested us to our scrapbook. I added a few pieces of work which were interesting to me, and also added a transcript by caryl churchill, which started off with a sentence, which gradually built up to a page full of writing. Just by adding a few simple words here and there, shows how dance can be developed from a single motif.
I also pointed out plants and ghosts because it had really interested me, which is why i watched the piece and wrote a review on it, the piece is really different yet inspirational. I like the how they work in relation to each other but hardly ever make contact. They are aware of their space and aware of all the other dancers, their connection builds intensity of the piece. It really inspired me as a dancer, and i would like to base a piece of work around this in the future.

Interview with Charlie Capewell on my improvised solo.
Charie Capewell:
Do you think i need more dynamics to reflect my stimulus to the audience?
I think the dyanmics are fine as the fast, sharp movement represent the wings of the fairies floating around. But you should play with the idea of dynmics as it can create intensity towars the end of the dance. You could play with stillness and suspension dynamics with the arms and legs.
What do you think of the space i use in my solo (diagonal)?
The spaceyou use that is on a diagonal is good, however i would like tosee the area your exploring abit more, however keep it on a diagonal line as it is an unusual choice, but works well.
What do you think of my beginning position of my solo?
I really like the idea of your back facing the audience as it is unexpected of what is about to happen it intrigues me from the very start, and feels like a mystery.
Is my stimulus present throughout my movement?
I can see an image of you holding an object and it is obvious that the main point is in connection with your hands, althougb because i haven't seen the picture you are studying i can't relate to it and point out the movement you are following.

'Eden' 2nd year dance piece review.
Upon reading the brief information before entering the perfromance, i registered that the title was 'Eden' associating the piece with peace and tranquility. We were offered to walk around he space where the performers were already performing, however of course it was optional.
Some of the audience included family or non-dancers leaving them confused as to why we were allowed to intrude in the dancers space. However as a dancer and performer myself , i was curious to what each dancer was doing, and how/why they had chosen to position themselves accoridngly.
The costumes ther performers wore, spoke for themselvles, they didn't stand out nor were they detailed but they were subtle, wih subtle pastel colours. As we walked in and toured the space, the performers were identifying their surroundings, taking their time to really feel and discover the space. The music which was played in the background was also tranquil, witht he sounds of the sea washing along the shore and the birds chirping.
They used large plastic sheets within the performance, which also made loud, crackling noises when the dancers played with it, The sound contrasted with the music as it weren't a natural sound such as the birds or the sea.
As the performance moved outside,we were asked to be quiet for the duration of the walk, we followed he performers and guides, through some of the most historical parts of coventry, which also represented the natural apect. When we arrived at the garden, the piece cam together, as you no longer had to imagine them in a garden, as they were in one.
Although we were viewing them from a height when we finally reached their level, it felt as though you could be intruding their space, as before. And of course there were so many different movements happening at oce, it was up to your own ccors who and what you wanted to view, and what position/angle you viewed it from.
Although the piece was and idea of tranquil and serenity, it was still eye opening, with the following an realisation of it, it spoke out but it was up to the audience what they chose to listen to.
